Off The Beaten Track
A book by the Rev Devereux Robert John Mack B.A. Vicar of Hawkesbury 1929-40
He was born 1890 in Llanelli South Wales
The Son of Thomas and Mary Mack a Cabinet Maker
named after his grand father his rather unusual name came
from a marriage between the Devereux and Mack families of Cambridgeshire
The hard back book and booklet were first published in 1933 it was available for sale in St Mary's this edition is a 1950 revision costing 2 shillings
I will never forget the day when as a child of 7 I bought my first copy my eyes were opened to the heritage that was my birth place Hawkesbury.
The Rev Devereux Mack must had the same effect on many thousands that have read his book and sparked an interest in Hawkesbury
either as a Villager or from a family that had moved away and returned to visit the church, its clear that The Rev Mack must have fallen in
love with St Mary's Hawkesbury which he named " a pearl in a superb setting".
