Cross referenced, where possible, to ‘Historical, Monumental and Genealogical Collections Relative to the County of Gloucester’ by Ralph Bigland 1794.

Conventions used: brackets to indicate obscure or uncertain items, broken lines to indicate missing sections, underlining to indicate ligature items – i.e. letters or numbers sharing a common stroke.

Asterisks * indicate items cross referenced with the survey carried out by Ralph Bigland, published 1794. A large number of items present in 1794 are now, inevitably, missing or unidentifiable. Interestingly, some monuments with dates prior to 1794 were not recorded at that time, possibly because they were erected some time after the events to which they relate.

N.B. Inscriptions have been copied verbatim, thus those dated prior to 1753 will refer to the Marian year, which ran from March 25th, not from January 1st.

Flat stones set in the Chancel floor, beginning at the east end, against the south wall.

  1. Huge slab, eleven feet long, right against the south wall, at the eastern end, clearly once inlaid with a brass, although all that remains now are the rivet and the recess in which it was set. The outline shows a mitered figure, holding a crosier with a rounded and knopped head, and the outline of a possible dedicatory scroll at shoulder level. The top half of the slab is in the form of window tracery. From the style of the robes indicated it is likely to be late 14th to early 15th century (later clerics were depicted in mass vestments). It has been suggested that the tomb may be that of Thomas UPTON, Abbot of Pershore, elected 1379, died 1413 (Abbots of Pershore were mitered).

 Descended from an ancient and respectable family long resident at Walcot near Chartbury in the county of Oxford he saw, when very young, its then representative obliged to alienate the family mansion and a considerable portion of the estate. By his talents industry and exertion during the course of a long and successful life he raised himself to the dignity of the peerage first as Baron Hawkesbury, of Hawkesbury, in the County of Gloucester, and afterwards as the Earl of Liverpool and he had the happiness of transmitting these honors (together with the Baronetage and the remainder of the family estate to which he had succeeded in 1790) to his posterity.

As a statesman he will long be remembered for the many important publick measures which he originated, more especially those which had for their object the improvement of the navigation and commerce of Great Britain. As an author he acquired the greatest celebrity from 1st. His discourse on the establishment of a National and Constitutional force in England in 1756. 2nd. A discourse on the conduct of Great Britain in respect to neutral nations in 1758. 3rd. A treatise on the coins of the realm in a letter to the King in 1805. The last two of these treatises are universally considered as standard books on the important subjects to which they relate and afford proofs of extensive reading sound principals and deep thinking never surpassed in any works on political law or political economy.        It was possible for a publick servant so situated and so distinguished not to feel a strong and sincere attachment to the gracious sovereign in whose service he continued upwards of forty years, and in the last years of his life he had the opportunity of expressing his feelings to that beloved sovereign in the dedication of his treatise on the coin of the realm.

He was twice married. First to Amelia, daughter of William WATTS esq. Formerly governor of Fort William in Bengal. She died in 1770. By her he had one son, Robert Banks JENKINSON born June the 8th 1770 who succeeded him in his titles and estates. Married to the Hon James Walter GRIMSTON, now Earl of Verulam, born June 8th 1783.

                            Born May 16th 1729                   Died December 17th 1808

Tablet b) Near this place reposeth the body of AMELIA JENKINSON first wife of the Right Honourable CHARLES JENKINSON, now LORD HAWKESBURY. She was the eldest daughter of WILLIAM WATTS Esq. President of the Council of Fort William in Bengal at that memorable period

when the Arms of Great Britain first acquired an Ascendency in India. She was born in 1750; she was married in 1769; she died, alas! On the 7th day of June 1770 after having given Birth to her only Child, the Honourable ROBERT BANKS JENKINSON, M.P.

Hence, Adulation! To proud sculpture fly.

Nor wound this honest marble with a lie;

The truth she lov’d inscribe her gentle dust,

Which almost blushes yet at Praise, though just.

Of Symmetry, the coldest breath to charm,

Of Modesty, to check a Wish too warm;

Of manners soft, by Elegance refin’d,

Nature’s pure Gift, with not an Art combin’d:

O’er every Gesture, all she look’d, or said,

Propriety its happy Polish shed;

In her soft Converse cheerfully sedate,

Joy assum’d wings, and Grief forgot its Weight.

Superior to the World, on Life’s gay Stage,

She lived, a Heav’n – born Pattern to the Age!
