
Another
view of St Mary’s Hawkesbury taken from the Knoll opposite the Old Vicarage is
to the left to the right is thought to be a medieval grange (see it in another
picture) in the forefront is what remains of the medieval manor house demolished
by the Jenkinsons abt 1775. To the left up the hill is (Hawkesbury) Upton,
extreme right distant about 1 mile is Horton church
The
road past the church to the right leads to Hawkesbury common, the road at bottom
of shot leads to Hillesley although it is now gated and not used. It is believed
a Saxon village stood to the left of the picture and floor platforms can still
be seen probably built of timber nothing now remains
