Ralph Bigland was Garter Principal King of Arms his interest in the County came about after his marriage to Ann Wilkins of Froster his original idea was to produce a history of Gloucestershire similar to Sir Robert Atkyns he started his collections in 1750 but by the time of his death in 1784 at the age of 73 nothing had been printed this task was taken up by his son Richard and others and from 1836-1899 the work was completed , Original Consisting of two very large volumes with numerous plates it is an extremely useful reference. The two volumes are now very valuable but the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society have produced 4 volumes edited by Brian Frith ref ISBN 0 900197 28 5 it contains additional information and an index and is available from Gloucester Record Office and book stores. Recently the two volumes were bought by Archive CD books http://www.archivecdbooks.com and reproduced in a CD format although the CD is very good value for money and contains the information as appears in the original 2 volumes it lacks the additions and valuable index from the later 4 volumes.
