Hearth Tax

Hearth Tax,1662---a partial transcript from doc E179/116/554 at Kew.

This one chosen as being more user-friendly than some later lists for 1664 and 1671-2; a copy of 1672 is held at Glouc CRO,but it is of varying quality for our area with faded or missing portions,although said to contain more names initially and included non-payers which this one doesn't appear to.

The names are arranged in two equal columns for each parish or hamlet within the hundred, and after the gentry at top of each section it may be possible to get some idea of house locations from the sequence of names,as in later census lists--so the experts tell us.

The hundred of Grumbalds Ash starts on m93 with a good list for Wickwar and later we have Alderly:-

note: The general trend for small parishes in this hundred shows a household density of 25-30/1000 acres which leaves our parish of c9000 acres apparently under recorded---there may be many unlisted 'exempts' and we might have to make an allowance for the large wooded areas? Other data published by James Horn on migration from the Berkely Vale shows a household density of up to 50/1000 acres at this time.

Just a few parishes checked for our area; exempt properties could have up to two hearths with occupants too poor to be charged,and some excluded on business grounds, eg a smithy--but not a baker? and not sure about others such as dyers--may need clarifying.
